Set the Atmosphere

When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.-Matthew 2:10

I was talking to a friend about how much I love decorating for Christmas. But really I enjoy all Christmastime festivities. Light shows, plays, caroling, I love it all. This past weekend our family put up our Christmas tree and decorated our front lawn. My husband and I helped the kids put ornaments on the tree and my oldest son had the honor of putting on the Christmas tree star. On Sunday, despite the chilly weather, at nightfall we bundled up to decorate our bushes and put up our new nativity set in our front yard. It was a fun time and a memory I hope my kids remember. My goal is not only to make special memories as a family, but more importantly to set the atmosphere in our home for celebrating our Savior.

“The homemaker has the ultimate career. All other careers exist for one purpose only - and that is to support the ultimate career." -C.S. Lewis

Homemaking is important for several reasons, but especially as daughters of the king. Jesus created the career of homemaking, not our culture so it never goes out of style. There are many key aspects of being a homemaker but today I will focus on one which is the daily atmosphere of our homes. Christmas time is an exceptionally fun time to set the atmosphere in our homes as wives and/or mothers, but really this should be something we do on a regular basis. As women God has given us the innate ability to nurture our families and our environment. How? By what we think, the words we say and especially what we do, we set the tone in our home for our families. You see, I want every Christmas for my children to feel special. So, I begin planning how I can set the atmosphere... Christmas music. Check. Decorations. Check. Christmas movies, cookies etc. I think you get the picture. I am not the perfect homemaker by any means, but am very passionate about the environment of my home. I believe this is important to God as well.

Whether it is the holidays or not, let us not neglect to set an atmosphere that reflects the fruits of the Spirit. Don't get caught up in comparison with anyone. God has uniquely designed you and therefore equipped you to meet the needs of your family in every way. The Holy Spirit will help you to discern what is necessary for your household. "And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all discernment, that you may approve things that are excellent" -Phil. 1:9-10

There is always room for improvement in managing our household, but only if we function in humility. What may work for you now, may change later but be open to the Holy Spirits guiding and I encourage you to swap ideas with other like minded women. Enjoy setting an atmosphere of love, joy, and peace during this season and beyond!!!
